Other Information

Stone cleaned in 2021 Captain Peleg Anthony Cornell, one of Westport’s most experienced master mariners of the 19th century whaling industry. From 1831 to 1870, he served as a Captain on no less than 20 whaling voyages before finally retiring at the age of 65. He outlived two sons and three wives. In 1831 that he married Hope Wordell who delivered the couple’s third child on December 19, 1836 and also named him Thomas Winslow Cornell. Sadly, Hope developed a post-partum infection and died the day after Christmas at age 35, leaving her week-old son in the care of relatives. Just three months after the death of his second wife and two months after the birth of his first grandchild, Peleg returned to the sea in command of the bark Osceola III, sailing out of New Bedford Harbor. Captain Cornell’s final three whaling voyages were made out of New York on the bark Addison and the brig A. B. Cook. He finally retired in 1870, at age 65. from chronic diarrhea, possibly from cholera, he died on May 5, 1876. He was 71 years old. Reverend Parris likely performed the service and Peleg was buried alongside his three wives and two sons at Linden Grove. : T. Baptista
