Other Information

Stone was broken in half due to a damaged base. The stone was cleaned and repaired and a new base was constructed in July 2021. William James Dyer was born in Dartmouth to Reuben Dyer (1819-1903) and the former Jane Baden (1825-1897) on New Year’s Eve of 1847, the couple’s only child. Rueben was initially a sailor, but by the 1855 census his occupation was listed as farmer. The family was living in Dartmouth with Jane’s father, Richard and his young daughter, Clara. By 1860, the Badens and Dyers had moved to Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard where the men toiled as sailors and farmers. Data from the 1865 census notes that Reuben, Jane and William had moved to the town of Gosnold within the Elizabeth Islands and Clara was living with them. Most likely, they resided on Cuttyhunk, the largest settlement among this small chain of islands where William also worked as a farmer. Exactly what happened on February 14, 1870 has been lost to time. It is likely that a winter storm whipped through the islands, bringing snow or rain and, certainly high winds. Was William attempting to secure a boat that had come loose from its mooring, protecting his livestock, or caught in icy floodwater? We don’t know. We do know that he drowned that day at the young age of 22. We don’t know if his body was recovered for burial or if the tablet at Linden Grove in plot 116 simply memorializes him. His parents’ grief is still palpable in his epitaph: “Dearest son, thou hast left us, here thy loss is deeply felt, it is God that hath bereft us, he will all our sorrows heal.” Research: T. Baptista
