Other Information

Inscribed on the back of the stone is "HBG" Stone was cleaned and leveled in 2021 Henry Brayton Gifford, born in Dartmouth in 1797, was a whaling captain who sailed on 8 voyages to the South Seas between 1824-1850 including the Bark Russell and Ship Winslow. After his first voyage he married his 4th cousin Kezia Howland Gifford who was 9 years younger. Over the next 24 years the couple would have seven children spaced 4-6 years apart given that Henry was so often at sea. Four of those children are buried with their parents in Linden Grove. Including Hannah who died in 1840 at six years old and twin sons who died as infants in May of 1852. In 1851 Henry became the captain of the ship Cherokee which ran a mail route to Panama. He died in 1860 at the age of 63 of ulcerated bowels. His last listed occupation was gentleman farmer. Kezia Gifford was a very independent woman, living as a widow for more than 30 years. She moved with her daughter Clara to Providence RI and remained there until Clara’s death in 1882 at age 38. Kezia then returned to Westport as records show she sold an acre of woodlands for $49 in the 1880’s. She purchased a lot in Linden Grove and erected a series of small granite monuments for her husband and her four deceased children. She died in 1895 at age 85 and in her will left her estate to her three surviving children. She also left $50 for the care of ($1,600 today) for the perpetual care of her family plot in Linden Grove.
