Other Information

Inscribed on the stone is "Mother". Stone cleaned in 2021 and repaired in 2022 Thomas D. Carr married Ruth Hoxsie in Little Compton on October 17, 1829. He was 18 and his bride, born to John and Phebe (Davol) Hoxsie in Little Compton on December 6, 1811, was 17 years old. Early in their married life, Thomas and Ruth resided in Providence, Rhode Island, where Thomas earned his living as a sailor. His occupation was listed as “water transportation”, as opposed to fishing. By the time their first child, John H. Carr was born in January of 1835, the family was living in Westport. A second son, Thomas Henry Carr, was born in Westport on November 23, 1848. Thomas gradually transitioned from a life on the water to shoemaker and cobbler, a trade he practiced until his retirement. Both of the Carr boys became ill in 1857, likely with tuberculosis, or consumption. John succumbed first, dying in April at age 22. Thomas was only 8 when he died in July, and was buried next to his older brother. The couple had been married for 63 years when Ruth died in Westport on February 20, 1893. At age 81, her cause of death was heart failure. The old shoemaker died of kidney disease on May 28, 1896 at his Westport home at age 85. Research: T Baptista

The cemetery was originally supervised by the private group, Linden Grove Association, but is now part of Town of Westport property and supervised by the Town Cemetery Director. This cemetery is next to Maple Grove Cemetery. There are three additions to the data for Linden Grove not available for the private cemeteries: photo(s) of each stone, a map of the cemetery showing relative locations of lots and the name of the owner(s) of the lot. There is only one "section" in Linden Grove. The Westport Gravestone Cleaning and Restoration Group has cleaned all the stones in Linden Grove using D/2 Biological Solution for cleaning. Most broken and leaning stones have been restored as of June 2023. Funding has been provided for training of the persons doing the work using CPA funding. CPA funding has also paid for supplies. Information on many of the interred has also been provided by Laura Oliviera, Todd Baptista and Troy Rebello.
