Double marble gravestones on the same granite base. Stone was loose on its base and repaired in August 2021. Enlisted in Civil War as a Wagoner on 18 Sep 1862 at age 24; enlisted in Co. E, 3rd Infantry Rgmt. on 26 Jun 1863 at Camp Hooker, Lakeville, MA. Source: "American Civil War Soldiers". He was one of five Westport residents serving in Company E of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, organized at Camp Hooker in Lakeville. The Regiment traveled on the steamers Merrimac and Mississippi from Boston to North Carolina, arriving on the 26th of October. Private Baker was a wagoner, an essential non-combat position that involved transporting supplies needed by the Army. His duties would have included driving the wagon carrying everything from food to ammunition to clothing, maintain the wagon, and feeding and caring for the mule team. At New Berne, North Carolina, Henry’s regiment was attached to the 3rd Brigade. Through the winter and into the spring, this “nine months militia” saw action and served on reconnaissance and expeditionary missions before mustering out on June 26, 1863. The regiment lost 17 soldiers to disease and one to battle wounds during their tenure in North Carolina. Henry worked as a bakery salesman and clerk. Research: T. Baptista
