Other Information

Base was cracked due to pin failure and there was no support for the stone. The stone was cleaned and reattached to a repaired base in 2021 Nathan Smith Kapp Davis was born in Gilboa, New York on March 11, 1829. His father Benjamin was originally from Wickford, Rhode Island and was successful as both a book keeper and a tailor. The family moved back to Rhode Island when Nathan was just an infant, around 1830-31. In Providence, the family boasted 13 household members by 1860 including Benjamin and Catherine and their children, Elizabeth, Susan, James, Mark, Abby, Nathan, his wife Annie, and an Irish servant/domestic. The children all held various jobs- jeweler, cooper, and schoolteacher. Nathan was a clerk who also served as assistant marshal of the census in Providence. Annie Case was from Westport, and married Nathan around 1850. A son, Walter Elwood Davis, was born in 1852 and died in 1858. The couple had another son Arthur. On May 26, 1826 Nathan enlisted as a sergeant with the B Company of the RI 10th Infantry. The unit protected Washington DC for three months and Nathan returned to RI on 9/1/1862. Nathan was just 34 years old when he died in the autumn of 1863. It's not recorded what caused his death- consumption, typhoid, pneumonia- the most likely causes. Research: T Baptista and L Oliveira
