Other Information

Stone cleaned and repaired 2021 George F. Davol was born in Westport to Jeremiah (1796-1875) and Barbara (Allen) Davol (1796-1879) on March 9, 1826, one of the couple's five offspring. George was a mariner who spent much of his life at sea. An 1841 letter from William Davol to his brother Edward, in the Westport Historical Society collection, reads "George F. Davol (then 15 years old) sailed on the 5th of April last in the good Bark Marcella (a New Bedford whaling ship), under) Captain Worth of New Bedford for the A(tlantic) Ocean. He came home in the right time when there was nothing for him to do. He hared round a while, then he went to school at the head of the river about 6 weeks. Then he swore that he would go no more, for he had got learning enough. He, like his older brother on former voyages, spent nearly all of his voyage (money) before he sailed. And Father, not having horseflesh enough for him, he bought the bay mare that Fred Brownell used to have. She used to have to goit (sic) about every night. Sleighing him especially. In your letter to George you requested him to acknowledge to Sallee Brownell. When he read it he said he should do no such thing and I suppose he has not. So no more about your amorous brother." On a future voyage in 1850 which took him to the island of Saint Helena, a British territory 1200 miles off the western coast of Africa, the "amorous brother" George married a native girl, Jane Mary Kay. He was 24 while she was just 16. They were married in the city of Jamestown, on Saint Helena. They returned to Westport and had two children, a son Julius (1852-1931) and a daughter, Hannah (1855-1931). When Julius was 4 and Hannah only a year old, George contracted tuberculosis, then known as consumption, and died on October 12, 1856 at age 30. He was buried in plot 33 grave 3 at Linden Grove. As best we can determine, Jane never remarried. She also contracted tuberculosis and died in 1869 at age 35. Death records list her place of burial as Westport but we have yet to find a burial record of gravestone for her. - Todd Baptista

G.R. 2. - Gravestone record, Linden Grove Cemetery, Head of Westport, Vital Records to 1850. The cemetery was originally supervised by the private group, Linden Grove Association, but is now part of Town of Westport property and supervised by the Town Cemetery Director. This cemetery is next to Maple Grove Cemetery. There are three additions to the data for Linden Grove not available for the private cemeteries: photo(s) of each stone, a map of the cemetery showing relative locations of lots and the name of the owner(s) of the lot. There is only one "section" in Linden Grove. The Westport Gravestone Cleaning and Restoration Group has cleaned all the stones in Linden Grove using D/2 Biological Solution for cleaning. Most broken and leaning stones have been restored as of June 2023. Funding has been provided for training of the persons doing the work using CPA funding. CPA funding has also paid for supplies. Information on many of the interred has also been provided by Laura Oliviera, Todd Baptista and Troy Rebello.
