Other Information

Inscribed on the stone is "Mother". Stone cleaned in 2021 and repaired in 2022 Henry Handy Gifford was born in Westport on October 10, 1826, to Levi Gifford (1785-1863) and the former Prudence Brownell (1788-1854) of Westport. Henry had six siblings and outlived all of them. At the age of 17, Henry moved to Fall River where he found work as a laborer. On April 22, 1849, he married 17-year-old Sarah Briggs Coggeshall, also a laborer. Sarah was the daughter of Robert and Bathsheba Coggeshall of Newport County, Rhode Island. Henry and Sarah’s eldest son, Charles Gifford, was born in 1854. Brothers Frank, Arthur, Walter and David followed, as well as a sister, Clara. Henry dealt in horses for much of his adult life, and also conducted a commission business. Sarah passed away in Fall River in 1894 at age 72 of epithelial cancer. Henry remained active well into his 80s. In 1900, he was living with his sons, Arthur and Walter, who operated a fish store, on Bedford Street. By 1910, the family had moved to County Street, and Henry’s son-in-law, painter Benjamin Mayhew, was also living with the Gifford men. Arthur, the fish dealer, died in 1915, at age 48. In his old age, Henry suffered a broken leg and was never able to fully recover from the injury. He died in Westport on Sunday afternoon, May 21, 1916, a few months shy of his 90th birthday. The cause of death was listed as arteriosclerosis, or heart disease. On Wednesday afternoon, May 24, his funeral was held at the Pacific Union Congregational Church at the Head of Westport, followed by the short journey to Linden Grove where Henry was buried alongside Sarah. His son, Frank, died two years later. Research: T. Baptista

G.R. 2. - Gravestone record, Linden Grove Cemetery, Head of Westport, Vital Records to 1850. The cemetery was originally supervised by the private group, Linden Grove Association, but is now part of Town of Westport property and supervised by the Town Cemetery Director. This cemetery is next to Maple Grove Cemetery. There are three additions to the data for Linden Grove not available for the private cemeteries: photo(s) of each stone, a map of the cemetery showing relative locations of lots and the name of the owner(s) of the lot. There is only one "section" in Linden Grove. The Westport Gravestone Cleaning and Restoration Group has cleaned all the stones in Linden Grove using D/2 Biological Solution for cleaning. Most broken and leaning stones have been restored as of June 2023. Funding has been provided for training of the persons doing the work using CPA funding. CPA funding has also paid for supplies. Information on many of the interred has also been provided by Laura Oliviera, Todd Baptista and Troy Rebello.
