According to "Westporters and the Civil War", Alexander married Phebe A. Hart in 1855 and was the son of Restcome Brightman & Cordelia (Palmer) Brightman. Phebe's name, year of birth and year of death is engraved on their gravestone. On monument stone with Mary MacGreevey Hitt, Lizzie Leonara Hitt, Alexander S. Brightman, Phebe A. (Hart) Brightman, and Howard Hitt. "U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles" from Ancestry.com state he enlisted in Co. B, MA 3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment on 23 Oct 1863 and mustered out on 23 Jun 1864. His father was a house & ship carpenter at Westport Point, MA. The family house which no longer exists stood on the northeast corner of the William Valentine estate and was subsequently torn down. Alexander was laborer, a mariner, ship and house carpenter, and then a plumber. This information was taken from Andrew C. Macomber and Richard W. Wertz, "Westporters and the Civil War", a typed and printed manuscript. Alexander and Phebe Brightman both received Soldiers' benefits.

G.R. 4. - gravestone record, Westport Point Cemetery in Westport Vital Records to 1850. This cemetery is located within the Westport Point Historic District. The Town of Westport maintains the grounds of the cemetery because families have perpetual care. It is believed to have originally been the Gifford family cemetery. The stones have all been cleaned as of June 2023 and stones repaired by the Westport Gravestone Cleaning and Restoration Group.
