Other Information

No stones appear in the cemetery for this family, but the records of their death, cremation or burial are in the cemetery department and/or Potter Funeral Home. Warren was buried at the Westport Point cemetery. John, his father, was born about 1844 on Annabon Island, Equatorial Guinea, off the coast of Africa, and joined a whaling ship there and came to Westport. It is said that he came on the Mattaposit under the captainship of George Manchester. He worked as a fisherman. He married a (native American) woman from Gay Head named Mineola or Mincola "Minnie" Rose. They had 8 children, all of them probably buried at the Point. The five whose names are recorded in the cemetery department are mother, Minnie Rose, and children John "Warren", Leland, Bessie "Betsy" Stevens Barnett and Ida. Potter Funeral Home states that Eliza Hill Stevens Lewis and Susan Minola were also buried at Westport Point. A baby, Alice C. Stevens, is buried there also. John "Warren" was a well known chauffeur and caretaker mostly to the Southard estate. He also had other jobs. He was known to have saved the life of Ms Waring from drowning at Horseneck Beach. She was the mother of Charlotte Fitch.
