Other Information

In 1836 at age 37 began a 50 year whaling business; owned 11 ships including the Andrew Hicks built at Westport Point. This ship was the last American whaling vessel & was sold in 1917 as a merchant marine ship. Andrew was a director of Merchants' Nat'l. Bank & owned an entire city block in New Bedford. He never married and died at his Westport Point farm in his 96th year.

These cemeteries are combined into one by transfer of bodies to the Hicks Private Lot. It is located on private property and not to be entered without express permission. Gravestones cleaned June, 2020.
