Other Information

This is possibly the grave of Paul or Perry Wainer. The date 1856 is uncertain since the stone only bears the digits 56 which could also be an age at death. This cemetery is on land that was owned by the Wainers for generations. It is most likely these are the graves of the Wainers. They were Native Americans who were successful in farming, merchant trade, shipbuilding among other endeavors. Michael Wainer and his family were intermarried with the Captain Paul Cuffe family and were close business associates and served key roles in most of Cuffe's successful shipbuilding and merchant trade.

Supplementary Information

5   Marked Stones in this Cemetery
27   Unmarked Stones (Fieldstones) in this Cemetery

There is no G. R. number for this cemetery. Based on Wainer homestead evidence found on an old Westport map, and Wainer family history, we believe that this and a cemetery nearby (WSP 883) were the burial grounds for the Wainer family, including Michael Wainer who lived on this property after 1800 who were people of color - native American and African-American - who are descendants of Cuff Slocum, patriarch of the Cuffe Wainer families. Capt. Michael Wainer bought the property in 1800 from Paul Cuffe who had bought it the year before. and lived there until his death. Michael was brother in law and business partner of Capt. Paul Cuffe.
