Other Information

Sylvia Wodell married Jonathan Wodell on December 22, 1825 Stone cleaned in 2021 and repaired in 2022 Jonathan was the fourth of eight children born to Phineas Wodell (1755-1821) and the former Rhoda Ryder (1763-1819). The family had moved from Tiverton, RI to Dartmouth/Westport in the latter Colonial period, where Jonathan was born on October 1, 1790. He married the former Sylvia Mosher on December 22, 1825. Their only child, a son, was born in November of 1828. He was named Phineas, after his paternal grandfather who had died falling off his horse at age 66 seven years earlier. In the 1830 census, the family of three, who preceded and proceeded a long history of farmers, were living just across the border in Tiverton. In the century before antibiotics, dysentery, tuberculosis, and pneumonia were likely to be fatal. Jonathan died at age 42 on March 7, 1832. His wife, Sylvia, was also 42 when she died three days after Christmas on December 28, 1840. Their orphaned son, Phineas, joined them in death on October 10, 1841 at age 13 years and 11 months. It is likely that mother and son both died of consumption. All three were buried in the Wodell/Wordell burying ground in North Westport. Research: T. Baptista
