Other Information

Stone cleaned in 2021 The oldest of four children born to Perry and Rebecah Wordell, David Wordell was born in Westport in January of 1810. David had a modest upbringing in Fall River. David learned the trade of cooper- the skill of heating and bending timbers to make wooden casks, barrels, vats, tubs and buckets; and was very successful. He married Mary May Wordell, the daughter of Joshua and Anna Wordell of Westport, in the city of New Bedford on November 23, 1840. Mary was seven years his junior. Their daughter, Amelia Gifford Wordell, was born the following year. Despite his success in business, David would not enjoy a long life. He was diagnosed with "inflammation of the bowels"- today we would refer to it as enterocolitis or, in previous generations, dysentery. David bequeaths all his estate and possessions to his "beloved wife, Mary" which included a home, the land upon which it was built, outbuildings, furniture and personal property. He also willed the impressive sum of $1,000 to Amelia "when she reaches age 18", a bed and bedding, and also stipulated that "she be educated at the expense of my estate." A widow at age 37, Mary Wordell eventually remarried to Fall River clothing dealer Leander Wilbur (1831-1894), also a widower, on March 29, 1863 Mary died of heart disease on April 20, 1892 at age 74. This large marble monument, a common style in the mid-1800s, was erected at the time of David Wordell's death and is one of the most impressive grave markers in the Rufus Wordell Cemetery on Old Bedford Road.
