Other Information

Jonee Sowle was born March 13, 1790, to David and Peace (Sherman) Sowle. She was skilled as a tailoress and also earned her living as a housekeeper. Jonee never married, and from at least 1850, she resided with house carpenter David Howland, his wife Eliza, and their children as their live-in housekeeper and tailoress. At the time of the 1860 census, there were four children in the household, ranging in age from 4 to 14 years. The family undoubtedly lived in the Hix Bridge - Horseneck Road area where their closest neighbors were Reverend Philip Sanford, his wife and four children, and Ann Gifford and her daughter, all of whom were buried within this same cemetery. Not long after this census was taken, Jonee became ill with tuberculosis, or consumption. She died of the disease on January 22, 1861, at the age of 70 years and 10 months and was buried in the northernmost grave on the property.
