Supplementary Information

3   Marked Stones in this Cemetery
12   Unmarked Stones (Fieldstones) in this Cemetery

G.R. 57. - gravestone record, Howard private lot, Old County, Road, Westport, Vital Records to 1850. This cemetery was also registered for the Town of Dartmouth as MHC 849 by Judith Lund after the road was changed. There are approximately 12 unmarked fieldstones remaining out of an estimate made by Eleanor Tripp in 1979 of 40. This is an historically important cemetery because of the intermarriage of the Howard family with Captain Paul Cuffe's family. Eleanor Tripp reports the following: "Andrew Sherman writes there was a large stone with the names of the Cuffees. Many years ago it was thrown in the road and smashed." "Sally Loomis records show that Naomi Howard, wife of Peter, was a Cuffee." This cemetery may include both Peter and Naomi Cuffe Howard. Westport Vital Records show that Naomi Howard is buried here. The deed for the Howard cemetery is vol. 16 p. 7 dated 6/4/1843 recorded 3/25/1848 from Abner B. Gifford for $1 quitclaim to Jane Cuffe, widow of John Cuffe. About 12 rods of land "for a burying place" located "in the corner of the pasture where the burying place now is" on the farm that grantor had of John Cuffe. Beginning at the corner of the wall, then S 3 rods and 4 feet by a wall, then W parallel to the N wall by the road 4 rods and 1 foot, then N parallel to the E wall 3 rods and no feet, then E by the line of the road where the wall stands 4 rods and 1 foot. At that time there doesn't seem to be a wall on the S or W side. Land is "to be used for no other purpose than as a burying ground." (Source: Richard Gifford)
