From Sons of Union Veterans on the Civil War,1936 & "Enlisted Men in the U.S. Navy", pg. 643 - Alexander Sanford - Civil War, veteran gravestone, Ordinary Seaman, enlisted U.S. Navy May 19, 1862 at age 21, deserted Apr 19, 1863. Served on ships Ohio, Mississippi & Portsmouth.
See his short biography in Andrew C. Macomber and Richard W. Wertz, "Westporters and the Civil War", a typed and printed manuscript, which says Alexander's father was a sailor and that his brother Uriah also served in the Navy. Alexander claimed to be older when he enlisted but was actually 17. This manuscript states that Alexander deserted after 11 months of service and that he died December 14, 1864 aged 21 of chronic diarrhea. His other siblings were John, Arphased, David, Uriah and Henrietta. |
