Other Information

Daniel Macomber was born in Westport on August 27, 1810 to Isaac Macomber (1776-1852) and the former Anna Weeden (1775-1851). He was the youngest of the couple’s three children. Daughter Phebe was born in 1803 and older son, Abraham, in 1805. Daniel began working on his family’s farm as a young man and never married. The Macombers’ closest neighbors were Bakers, Tripps, and other farming Macomber kin. The real estate value of the farm was estimated at a modest $1,600, approximately $57,000 in today’s money. In the 1850 census, 39 year-old Daniel was still residing with his 73 year-old parents. But both Isaac and Anna died in the ensuing two years and were buried in the Friends North Burial Ground. Daniel lived alone for several years afterward, farming, and peddling his yield. As the Industrial Revolution swept the nation, Daniel took a steady paying job as a machinist. By the end of the Civil War, he had moved in with his sister, Phebe, her husband, farmer Nathan Slade, the couple’s unmarried daughter, Elizabeth, and a 17 year old young woman named Annette Weston whose relationship to the family is unclear. After Nathan’s death, Daniel, his sister, and niece continued living together although the 1880 census lists him as a “boarder” in her home. Brother Abraham died in 1891 and Phebe passed in her 95th year in 1898. Daniel died of “old age” on February 27, 1899 in his 89th year. After a funeral service at the Friends Meeting House in Central Village, he was buried near the graves of his parents at Friends North on March 2. - Todd Baptista 2021
