Records of the Almshouse exist for parts of the period in which the Almshouse (known as the Town Farm or the Poor Farm) had residents. The records show deaths at the Almshouse and indicate if the body was "taken by friends" or buried at the Potters Field at Beech Grove or other private burial grounds, e.g., Friends North Cemetery or the so-called Tallman's Cemetery (location unknown) or to other towns. This virtual cemetery includes those persons whose bodies were "taken by friends" but are not listed in cemeteries covered by this website. In this way at least information on the dates of death of people is included. It should be noted that the Almshouse or Town Farm or Poor Farm as it was known served many purposes: for the disabled, elderly, poor, orphaned, mentally incapable, kind of a hospital, and hospice. There are also Almshouse Records which show deaths but do not state what happened to the bodies. Those names with as much information as was provided are included in this virtual cemetery listing. Please note some of these persons may be buried in other towns or were moved after the first burial. Almshouse and other related records are shown on the Town of Westport website under "historical documents." Betty Slade, January 5, 2022.
