Other Information

Anstrus Anthony Baker. She was born in Dartmouth on October 25, 1801 to James Baker (1765-1844) of Westport and the former Sarah Davis. Anstrus, spelled as Anstriss in some documents, never married and had no documented occupation although she undoubtedly supported herself with a job in the city. She lived in New Bedford for most of her adult life and by the Civil War years, she was living with Reverend Benjamin Batchelor, a second generation clergyman who had emigrated from England to the United States. His wife, Mary’s maiden name was Davis but she was not related to Anstrus’ maternal family. The Batchelor family was apparently well-to-do, living in a new wooden frame home at 167 North Street that still stands today. Benjamin and his wife had a son and a daughter and employed a full-time live-in servant. Census records from 1865 and 1880 list Anstrus living with them as a boarder. She died of bronchitis in April 26, 1881, just short of her 80th birthday.
