BEECH GROVE
G.R. 1. - Beech Grove Cemetery,Central Village.Town-owned historic cemetery. The records state: "1855. Voted to purchase the six acre lot adjoining the wood lot of Thomas J. Allen for a Public burying Ground. Voted that Abraham R. Gifford be Superintendent of the Burying Ground." The cemetery is divided into several sections, including a potters field and dedicated veteran lots. The sections are identified with a letter and a number such as A1, B1, etc. Both section and lot numbers, or section and grave numbers are given for the interred in most cases. Sections have various size 'lots' within them: 1 grave, 2-grave, 4-grave, 6-grave and 12-grave. Cremated remains are also recorded when known. In some cases, there are no lots, only grave numbers, e.g., A4 to A7. Sections are organized in various ways which can be confusing when searching the cemetery. Arrows have been provided on the map as a visual guide to show how the lots are laid out. A straight arrow indicates lot numbers (or grave numbers) that run consecutively from one end of the section to the other end. A zigzag symbol indicates lot numbers that run consecutively from one row to the neighboring row and back again. In recent years the new plots are single graves only. If people wish to have a "plot" they simply buy adjoining single graves.
All interred in the 'Potters field' can be searched by typing 'potters field' into the 'Lot' box. All interred in the 'Veteran lots' can be searched by typing 'veteran lots' into the 'Section' box. Details on the 'veteran lots' sections (D3 and D4), which are a combination of multi-grave lots and single graves, are given in a separate sub-map. An infants Scattering Field is located on the North side of the Cemetery. Beech Grove was established in 1855.
There are only 3 gravestones in Potters Field. This is a section of the Beech Grove cemetery seemingly dedicated to burial of indigent persons. Originally there were medallions placed in the ground for the interred but the information on them has been lost and the medallions have sunk into the ground now unseen. The cemetery records themselves do not identify the interred. Betty Slade reviewed the remaining records of the Poor Farm (Town Farm) and found records for persons who were interred in Potters Field in those periods. It is not known if others were interred before or after that period. These records give the row and place of the interred. The Poor Farm documents can be found on the town of Westport website under "Historical Documents." In 1992 a 12-grave lot was sold at the South end of Potters Field and labeled B-261. Since 2019 the Westport Gravestone Cleaning and Restoration Group has been spraying stones with D/2 Biological Solution donated by Ted Kinnari and cleaning them. Most of the old sections are completed. Slow progress on the restoration of the many leaning and broken stones is being made financed by CPA funds and volunteers, especially Todd Baptista, Troy Rebello, Laura Oliviera and Dawn Young. There is no G.R. number. This cemetery is on private property. Owner's permission is required to visit. To date no marked stones have been found, but it is reported that there are two marked stones "RK" and "IK" (likely Robert Kirby and Ichabod Kirby.) So, based on the testimony of persons familiar with this cemetery, we believe upon closer inspection some crude engravings may be found. The property on which this cemetery is located has been known as the Waite-Potter farmstead, however it is better described as the Waite-Kirby-Potter property. It was purchased by Robert Kirby from Thomas Waite, the original owner. The house has been destroyed by a hurricane, but the huge stone chimney remains and was restored in 2007. It might be the oldest structure in Bristol County.

G.R. 17.- gravestone record, Kirby private lot, on crossroad from Drift Road to Main Road, Westport Vital Records to 1850. This cemetery is within map and lot 54/2D on private property. Nathaniel4(Robt3,Rich2-1) Kirby had a farm "near the small fork in the Noquechuck River, above the bridge." Dwight, "Kirbys of New England" (1888). This farm was inherited by, and divided between, his sons Wesson and Justus. Justus' homestead was located "a little north of the spot where the present Town Alms House now stands, and the old well is in the road --- the east or 'drift' road that was opened to the public about fifty years ago." Wesson's farm presumably abutted Justus' to the north. Abraham6 Kirby "inherited the homestead of his father, Wesson, where he lived and died and was buried." So to try and fill in a lineup card for the Kirby Cemetery, my guesses would be as follows: 1. Abraham6 Kirby (1775-1836) 2. Eunice (White) Kirby (ca 1780-1836) 3. Harvey7 Kirby (1810-1819) s. Abraham & Eunice 4. Wesson5 Kirby (1731-1798) 5. Hannah (White) Kirby, wife of Wesson 6. Nathaniel4 Kirby (1708-1738) 7. Abigail (Russell) Kirby, wife of Nathaniel 8. Justus6 Kirby 9. Catherine (Cornell) Kirby, wife of Justus.
The dates (1776-1836) and initials "AK" would fit my great-great-great grandfather, Abraham6(Wesson5,Nathaniel4, Robert3,Richard2-1) Kirby (although actual date of birth is December 11, 1775). The intitials "EK" would fit his wife, Eunice (White) Kirby. She was the daughter of Obed & Sarah (Peckham) White who are buried in cemetery WSP 873. According to Dwight's "Kirbys of New England," Abraham inherited this farm from his father Wesson, who in turn had inherited it from his father Nathaniel Kirby. The unmarked stones are probably earlier generations of Kirbys.

HOWARD
G.R. 57. - gravestone record, Howard private lot, Old County, Road, Westport, Vital Records to 1850. This cemetery was also registered for the Town of Dartmouth as MHC 849 by Judith Lund after the road was changed. There are approximately 12 unmarked fieldstones remaining out of an estimate made by Eleanor Tripp in 1979 of 40. This is an historically important cemetery because of the intermarriage of the Howard family with Captain Paul Cuffe's family. Eleanor Tripp reports the following: "Andrew Sherman writes there was a large stone with the names of the Cuffees. Many years ago it was thrown in the road and smashed." "Sally Loomis records show that Naomi Howard, wife of Peter, was a Cuffee." This cemetery may include both Peter and Naomi Cuffe Howard. Westport Vital Records show that Naomi Howard is buried here. The deed for the Howard cemetery is vol. 16 p. 7 dated 6/4/1843 recorded 3/25/1848 from Abner B. Gifford for $1 quitclaim to Jane Cuffe, widow of John Cuffe. About 12 rods of land "for a burying place" located "in the corner of the pasture where the burying place now is" on the farm that grantor had of John Cuffe. Beginning at the corner of the wall, then S 3 rods and 4 feet by a wall, then W parallel to the N wall by the road 4 rods and 1 foot, then N parallel to the E wall 3 rods and no feet, then E by the line of the road where the wall stands 4 rods and 1 foot.
At that time there doesn't seem to be a wall on the S or W side. Land is "to be used for no other purpose than as a burying ground." (Source: Richard Gifford)

TRIPP - SISSON
G.R. 60. - gravestone record, Tripp and Sisson private lot, on road from Handy's Corner to Head of Westport, Vital Records to 1850. This has been an unkempt cemetery at the site of a former gravel pit. Westport Highway Department has begun clearing the grounds in March 2020 under the direction of Chris Gonsalves as part of a town project to protect cemeteries. New stones are being uncovered and others now can be read better. A statement by Richard Gifford, genealogist, is as follows (March 2020):
This cemetery is likely the one mentioned in a series of deeds in 1856-57, not recorded until 1880, from various heirs of Stephen Tripp Sr to Stephen Jr., conveying shares of the Stephen Sr. homestead farm. No size is given, but the abutters are North: Isaac Tripp (Isaac Jr., Stephen's brother), East: the river, South: Abner Kirby (my great-great grandfather), and West: Francis Tripp (Stephen's first cousin). Each of these deeds has language "Reserving to ourselves the right to be buried in & use the burial ground & the privilege of passing and repassing to and from the same." As far as know, all of the grantors ended up being buried elsewhere (Beech Grove, Linden Grove, Maple Grove).
This property was conveyed in 1817 by Isaac Tripp to his son Stephen. It was a 14 acre segment of Isaac's homestead farm where Stephen's house then stood. Around the same time Isaac conveyed other parts of his homestead to his other sons, including William (ancestor of Prince Albert Tripp, buried at 311 Drift). There is no mention of a burial ground in any of these deeds. Isaac Tripp (1736-1826) and his wife Edy/Edith Russell (1737-1804) have a cenotaph at Linden Grove but are reportedly buried elsewhere, perhaps here. Edy was a member of the Apponegansett Monthly Meeting but was disciplined for "marrying out of meeting."
Isaac Tripp inherited the entire homestead farm of his father, Francis Tripp (1705-1779). Francis inherited the farm under the will of his father, James Tripp (1656-1730), an original settler of Westport. Francis owned the northern part of a 195 acre parcel granted by the Dartmouth Proprietors in 1713 to James Tripp, with Francis' brother Robert owning the southern part. James' homestead was just south of Noquochoke Orchards, which was the homestead farm of James' brother Joseph. James and Joseph, I believe, are buried with unmarked stones at the east end of the Milk-Waite-Brightman cemetery. James, Joseph and Francis were Quakers.
All in all, if there are a significant number of unmarked stones in the Tripp-Sisson burial ground, it would indicate that it was started by either Isaac or Francis Tripp.

SANFORD - BROWNELL
There is no G.R. number. This cemetery is within map and lot 19/48 near 645 Sanford Road on the same Map and Lot as the Andrew & Ann Sanford Cemetery. As of 2006, owner is Christopher Riley.
The deed evidence indicates that this is actually two cemeteries but not divided. The 25 ft by 25 ft section at the west end was purchased by David Sanford from his half-nephew Thomas Sanford in 1879. The unmarked stones at the east end were the "Pettey Burial Ground". These two bordered the north wall of "burying yard of the late John Sanford" [i.e. Sanford-Brownell].
Here is the abstract: vol. 92 page 129, Thomas Sanford of Fall River (wife Sylvia releases dower) for $6 to David Sanford 1st of Westport, a parcel of land measuring 550 square feet (should be 625?), beginning at the NW corner of the burying yard of the late John Sanford, then N along a wall 25 feet to a wall corner; then E 25 feet to the Pettey Burying Ground. then S in a parallel line to the W boundary to the John Sanford burying yard; then W to the point of beginning.
Note that there in this deed there is no stone wall separating the David Sanford parcel from the Pettey Burial Ground.
The house at 625 Sanford Road, built between 1810 and 1830 and attributed (mistakenly, most likely) to Elisha Francis, was occupied by Thomas Sanford. When he sold this property to Rhoda T. Macomber there was a provision "Reserving the Sowle or Francis burying yard as now walled in on the south side of the granted premises." The same burial ground was sold by Hiram Francis to Elisha Francis, at which time it measured 1936 square feet. This would be the nearby "Elisher" Francis cemetery.
When this farm was sold by Squire Sanford to George W. Sowle in 1822, it was noted to be that part of his father's estate "as my Mother improves by her thirds." Since the widow was usually granted dower for the portion around the farmhouse, this was likely the location where David Sanford Sr lived. No cemetery is mentioned in the 1822 conveyance, nor in the 1836 conveyance from Sowle to Elisha Francis. David Sanford Sr is buried in the cemetery named for him some distance to the south.
The ca1880 house at 645 Sanford Road is attributed to George F. Pettey.
John Sanford's house is still in existence at 685 Sanford Road, although the estimated construction date (1830) makes it possible that it was built by Holder Earle, who purchased the property in 1834. [Richard Gifford, November 2020]

This database separates out the formerly combined Petty-Mosher Cemetery into separate cemeteries because they are separated by a stone wall. This cemetery was formerly on land owned by George Medeiros. The land was sold to Maya Way Land Development Company which divided the parcel into 10 lots. The Mosher Cemetery is a separate burial ground which has been abandoned and is now located across a wall from map 68, lot 3D (as of May 2022) and from the Petty Cemetery. The gravestones were removed perhaps inadvertently. The owner of 11 Maya Way had a stone wall built around it.

There is no G.R. number for this cemetery. This cemetery was the center of outrage when the ELJ company allegedly removed stones which were found near a stone crusher. This action was reported by David Anctil. The District Attorney did not pursue the case in court, but the Town of Westport did. Although there was no penalty to ElJ directly, by court order, PAL was hired by ELJ to research and register the cemetery. Research was done by Public Archaeology Laboratory(PAL)on the existence of remains and on the history of the property. The stones were replaced and a proper dedication ceremony was done with several people present. PAL mentions that this is possibly a Howard family cemetery. The wooden stacks in the cemetery photo indicate the location of the unmarked gravestones which were replaced after being removed by the owners. Richard Gifford suggests it has the remains of Jeremiah Devol, perhaps his parents or grandparents, perhaps brothers and sisters, his two wives and children and grandchildren.

PETTY, JOSHUA
There is no G.R. number for this cemetery. This cemetery is within map and lot 22/25 with many unmarked and only one marked stone -- that of Lt. Joshua Petty, a soldier of the Revolutionary Army. It is assumed that this is one of the Petty family cemetery. There is an easement on the property to go to the cemetery.
The following information was submitted by ncsutton@hotmail.com
I am writing concerning Cemetery WSP #869. Joshua Petty is my 4th great-grandfather. I believe the first mention of this cemetery in deeds of Westport occurs in a deed in vol.58, pgs 230-231 of Bristol Co (New Bedford) Deeds. Thomas Sanford 2nd grants a right of way to Moses Petty (son of Joshua),thence east seven and three fourths degrees south along by the South West corner of the burying ground (lines 15 & 16). This deed was signed on 31 July 1866. The next mention is in a deed in Bristol County (New Bedford), vol. 67, pages 8-10. James L. Snow, Ray Green Pettey (son of Moses), and Louisa Snow (daughter of Moses) convey to John Buckley being the homestead farm late of Moses Pettey, deceased (lines 8 &9) And subject to the right of way across the land hereby conveyed for Thomas Sanford 2nd, as provided in deed from Moses Pettey aforesaid to said Sanford and reserving a burying ground four rods and a half by two rods and a half & on the northerly side of the premises hereby conveyed and a right to pass to and from said burying ground from the road aforesaid.(lines 15-20) This deed is dated 13 May 1870. This was land that I believe was conveyed from Nathan Petty (will gives all of his homestead to his son Joshua; Bristol Co., MA Probate Records, Nathan Petty, Westport, 1809) to Joshua Petty. In a deed dated 15 April 1826, Bristol Co., MA Deeds, vol. 29, pages 222-223. Joshua conveys to Moses Petty One undivided half of my Homestead farm situate in Westport...Considering the above documents, I believe that Rosamond (Potter) Petty wife of Joshua, Moses Pettey, and Phebe (Cook) Petty wife of Moses are also buried in this cemetery. It may also be the burying place of Nathan Petty and his wife (wives?) as his will was probated in Westport in 1809 and this land was conveyed to Joshua in his will. Note: The change in spelling of Petty is spelled as in the documents. I think your website is very well organized and easy to navigate. I hope the above information is helpful. I have copies of the above mentioned documents and would be willing to share with fellow researchers. Nancy Sutton 25 April 2008

There is GR 62 of the records found in Westport Vital Records to 1850. It likely is the burial ground of George Cadman whose farmstead's south boundary is now the Charlotte White Road Extension. This property was owned for over a century by the White family, descendants of George Cadman. It was owned by Stephen P. Kirby, a grandson of Obed White. Stephen P. and his brother Abner Kirby owned the northern part of the Obed White farm. The property owner does not want visitors. No marker is being placed here.

G.R. 47. - gravestone record, Davis private lot, Davis Road, Westport, Vital Records to 1850. Some bodies were moved to Swan Point cemetery and some seem to have been buried at Maple Grove. It is not known definitively if all Davis family (or other) remains were removed from this cemetery. The site is unkempt. It abuts Lots 1J, 1M, and 1T and is across from lot owned by Kenneth & Stacey Medeiros. We have records from Maple Grove that at least Rev. Perry Davis and Deacon Abiel Davis were moved to Maple Grove. We do not see records for the others at cemeteries in Westport so do not know if their bodies were also moved. We do note in the description that the bodies might have all been moved and we saw no engraved stones. Plan in Book 52, page 10 at the New Bedford Registry of Deeds (NBRD) shows the existence of the cemetery. The deed in Book 10431, page 298, at the NBRD states that there is a cemetery and not part of the deed. This is common with many cemeteries which did not have perpetual care by the town.

Capt. Michael Wainer bought the property in 1800 from Paul Cuffe who had bought it the year before. and lived there until his death. Michael was brother in law and business partner of Capt. Sources:
1. Research paper entitled “An Historical Sketch of Coxet and The Richmond Family” by Henry B. Worth dated 1907. (Document – courtesy of Richard G. Manchester which includes photo of Leland W. Manchester residence, Richard’s grandfather).
2. Westport map of 1885 identifies the triangular tract of land mentioned below.
3. Westport map of 1871 shows the location and name “Old Indian Burying Ground” close to Simmons Brook, and the A. Manchester property.
The following is an abstract from Henry Worth’s document:
The triangular tract of land from Adamsville, RI, south to Buzzards Bay and bordering Little Compton, RI, to the west and the west branch of the Westport River to the east was called Seconet. In 1741, this land was annexed to MA. The Devol Pond area in the southeast part of the triangle became known as Coxet after the Indian name Cockeset. Before 1700 the area was the home of the Seconet Indian tribe that aided the English in King Philip’s war.
Henry Worth purports that the Native American who shot King Philip lived in this region to the north of the Abraham Manchester farm. His name was Alderman and he was a Seconet Indian. Worth makes frequent reference to the Seconet tribe who lived in this area.
In 1773, Edward and Perez Richmond deeded ninety-five acres north of Abraham Manchester’s farm and west of Simmons Brook to Pardon Brownell. In this deed there were two exceptions the first of which was “1. The Indian Burial place.” identified on the Westport map of 1871 as the “Old Indian Burying Ground”. Later deeds do not mention the burial ground.
On pages 27 and 28 of Worth’s research document he says:
“Edward and Perez Richmond, in the deed to Pardon Brownell, reserved the old Indian Burial Ground on the north side of the farm and their descendants are still owners of that lot. Possibly this arrangement was made to fulfill a promise given to the Redmen when it was evident that their race was doomed to disappear from the land and they requested some friend among the English to secure and preserve their last resting place. So this Indian Cemetery remains marked and respected, one of the very few whose tenure is fixed and established by the records.”

Virtual Westport Cemetery for Names Found in Paupers Records
Records of the Almshouse exist for parts of the period in which the Almshouse (known as the Town Farm or the Poor Farm) had residents. The records show deaths at the Almshouse and indicate if the body was "taken by friends" or buried at the Potters Field at Beech Grove or other private burial grounds, e.g., Friends North Cemetery or the so-called Tallman's Cemetery (location unknown) or to other towns. This virtual cemetery includes those persons whose bodies were "taken by friends" but are not listed in cemeteries covered by this website. In this way at least information on the dates of death of people is included. It should be noted that the Almshouse or Town Farm or Poor Farm as it was known served many purposes: for the disabled, elderly, poor, orphaned, mentally incapable, kind of a hospital, and hospice. There are also Almshouse Records which show deaths but do not state what happened to the bodies. Those names with as much information as was provided are included in this virtual cemetery listing. Please note some of these persons may be buried in other towns or were moved after the first burial. Almshouse and other related records are shown on the Town of Westport website under "historical documents." Betty Slade, January 5, 2022.

This cemetery has not been located but it is in the Death Records from the Vital Records to 1850 as GR 46 as the burial place of Noah Macomber whose name was not found elsewhere. the source seems to be a private record from a Macomber family Bible, which in 1918 was in the possession of Mrs. Phalla D. Tripp of Westport. Betty Slade, Feb 4, 2022. "This burial ground appears to be gone. I would say excavated and mined for sand for building Fall River mills. We were able to measure off with some accuracy the approximate site. Interestingly, there is one superannuated and decapitated oak tree at original grade exactly where the north boundary of the Macomber Plot would be. (see photos) First view is west looking east to Adirondack Lane. Second view is from Adironack Lane looking west. No evidence of former graveyard. This was the Leander Freelove parcel of old."
